Abstract

The Internet is made up of more than 20,000 autonomous systems (ASes), each of which is a collection of IP networks and routers with a single and clearly defined routing policy. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the core routing protocol of the Internet. It works by maintaining a table of IP networks which designate network reachability between ASes.

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use BGP to exchange information between their routers. They seek to build networks that will accommodate varying traffic loads, and be robust to link and router failures. For this aim, a better understanding of the BGP routing is very necessary.

AS-path prepending is a common method to influence BGP routing decision. By prepending the local ASN multiple times, ASes can make advertised AS paths appear artificially longer. AS path-prepending is widely applied in the Internet. It can be found in 15.4% AS paths we have observed. Analyzing data from BGP table dumps, we try to shed light on the importance of AS-path prepending in the Internet. Simple experiments are supposed to study how observed prependings can be integrated into interdomain-routing models of the Internet.
